Our Sustainability Plans

Climate change has become a cause for concern across the world. The last 4-year period has been the warmest on record, extreme weather events are becoming more severe and common, with July 2019 recorded as the highest UK temperature at 38.7°C.

A big factor in the change of our climate is the impact of gases, mainly CO2, trapping heat in the atmosphere. To mitigate the effects this has on our lives we all need to rapidly reduce carbon emissions to zero. This has led to over 300 local authorities declaring climate emergencies and the realisation of the need to rapidly reduce carbon emissions.

Nottingham aims to be carbon neutral by 2028. That means the city needs to reduce its emissions as close to zero as possible, then offset any remaining emissions to become carbon neutral. With everyone’s help our city can become the first city in the UK – and only the second in Europe – to achieve this.

Carbon neutral: Having a balance of how much carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere Vs the amount that is absorbed through carbon capture.

How are we helping?

Cockburn Lucas are committed to doing our bit; behaving as responsibly as possible and helping towards meeting the goals of Nottingham Carbon Neutral 2028.

Read more in our Environmental & Carbon Assessment Report about the work we have been doing with Nottingham Trent University to establish our carbon footprint, look at ways to minimise it and ensure we are a net contributor to these worthy goals.

We are pleased to support Mossy Earth and really like what they do

Their simple aim is to help towards the preservation of the natural world. They do this by carrying out projects that help restore wild ecosystems, support wildlife and biodiversity and help fight climate change. The projects and activities they research and undertake are typically involved with re-forestation, re-wilding or Carbon sequestration.

In Scotland, some of their rewilding projects have ranged from building Eagle nest platforms, relocating Mountain Hares and radio tagging Atlantic Salmon and they also carry out projects in other countries such as protecting Turtle nests and eggs and finding solutions to help Iberian Wolf packs co-exist with humans and goat herds.

As well as re-wilding they also have continuous reforestation projects to plant trees to reforest areas and this is typically done in Scotland, Ireland, Solvakia, Portgual and other countries.

Our monthly business membership contributes towards their rewilding projects and annually enables the planting of 96 trees.

We will continue to monitor our carbon footprint and ensure we transition over to renewable sources of energy as well as implementing other initiatives such as Electric Vehicles and composting our office waste. We will ensure where practicable we can match our output by offsetting with Mossy Earth and other projects to help build a sustainable future for us all.
